We need a second vehicle and the choice is down to 3:

Olds Bravada (aka Trailblazer): 2002, 58K miles, auto, AWD, leather - 9K

Explorer: 2004, 100K miles, auto, 4WD, 8K (new rear differntial being installed before sale)

XTerra: 2001, 100K, Manual 4WD, 6200 is the price. This one seems to have fcktup synchros...which means I'll have to replace the gearbox and the final price will be around 8K

So...what else should I look at mechanically? Has anyone had one of these trucks? Any common problems? Any other car I can look at? the budget is 7-8$, but I can go a little over.

The Trailblazer with a 4.3ltr V6 would be a good bet!!!

The XTrerra is a really good vehicle as well. It's a little 'under-powered' if you'd be hauling anything but they're very reliable and have a really good off-road suspension....like the old Toyota trucks!!!

I wood stay clear of the Exploder, er I mean explorer.....

Isn't the Olds Bravada the same as a Chevy Blazer/GMC Jimmy ?
That is different than the Trailblazer.

Xterra are good trucks. But Nissan parts are some of the most expensive on the shelf.

Bravada is pink. It is a nice truck, but it is pink.
Xterra has a dying tranny - very hard to put it into the first gear, makes noises.
2000 for a remanufactured gearbox.

What are the common issues with 3.7 Jeep Liberty?

No iisues with the 3.7ltr Libertys. They're actually a pretty reliable vehicle. Not as tough as the old 4.0 I6 but not too bad at all.

I've owned and WILL own Jeeps all my life! We have a '98 Tahoe and an '07 Nitro for now. The Tahoe is great but there are issues with the wiper motor and module which are common to the type. other than that the 5.7ltr is freakin AWESOME!!!

i do not like the 3.7 jeep motor at all... they are not cheap either when they blow up and ive seen a lot blown up, i like 4.3s aka a clean zr2 blazer or somethin... i would make sure the xterra doesnt just need the clutch bled or somethin no idea if its hydraulic cable or what if its hydraulic i wouldnt be surprised if it had a spongy clutch

The 3.7 motor has the reputation of spitting rockers even while maintaining properly. Been there, fixed one in the girlfriend's last year. Just a little .02 worth.
